Second Boer War
1899–1902 CE
The Second Boer War began in 1899 as Britain fought the Boer republics of the Transvaal and Orange Free State in southern Africa. It involved conventional battles, guerrilla warfare, scorched-earth tactics and concentration camps. Though Queen Victoria died before the war ended, it belongs to the late Victorian imperial world and the transition into the Edwardian age.
The war mattered because it damaged British assumptions about imperial efficiency and morality. It revealed the cost of fighting mobile settler forces and raised public questions about camps, civilian suffering and military reform. The Boer War also marked a transition from Victorian imperial confidence toward twentieth-century warfare and growing doubt about the costs of empire.
