Holding for the Queen
First published 2025
South Africa, 1899. Captain Andrew Baird and the Royal Malverns return to war as Boer forces invade Natal. British concern for the Uitlanders and imperial control collides with Boer determination to preserve independence, drawing Andrew through the opening battles and into the siege of Ladysmith.
On the opposing side is Jacoba Fourie, whose earlier connection with Andrew makes the war personally divided as well as politically complex. The novel examines conventional battle, siege conditions and the difficulty of recognising individual motives within two societies mobilised for conflict.
