Otto von Bismarck

1815–1898

Otto von Bismarck was the Prussian statesman who engineered German unification through diplomacy and wars against Denmark, Austria and France. As the first chancellor of the German Empire he balanced European alliances, fought political and religious opponents and introduced pioneering social insurance before dismissal by Wilhelm II.

In George MacDonald Fraser’s Royal Flash, Flashman’s affair with the celebrated adventuress Lola Montez brings him into conflict with the young Otto von Bismarck. In George MacDonald Fraser’s Flashman and the Tiger, in The Road to Charing Cross he assists the journalist Henri Blowitz at the Congress of Berlin and later travels on the Orient Express, where Bismarck forces him into a plot involving the threatened assassination of Emperor Franz Joseph.
