The English Civil War began in 1642 after years of political and religious conflict between Charles I and Parliament. The First Civil War ended with the destruction of the king’s main armies, but renewed royalist risings and a Scottish invasion produced a Second Civil War in 1648. Charles I was executed in 1649, yet the conflict continued when Charles II allied with the Scottish Covenanters and led the final campaign that ended at Worcester in 1651.
The wars mattered because they challenged the foundations of monarchy, obedience and representative government. Parliament created the New Model Army, soldiers became a political force and regicide became a reality. Fighting, siege, requisitioning and disease left deep local scars across England while the connected wars devastated communities in Scotland and Ireland.
