Wars of the Three Kingdoms
1639–1653 CE
The Wars of the Three Kingdoms is a broad term for the conflicts that engulfed England, Scotland and Ireland from the Bishops’ Wars through the Civil Wars and their aftermath. These wars involved royalists, parliamentarians, Covenanters, Irish Confederates, New Model Army soldiers and local communities. They were not one simple English conflict, but a connected crisis of monarchy, religion and power across three kingdoms.
The wars mattered because they broke the Stuart state apart and remade it by force. The monarchy was overthrown, Ireland was devastated, Scotland was militarily subdued and England experienced republican rule. The consequences shaped memory, landholding, religion and political argument for generations.
