Her presence reveals the domestic labour and endurance required behind a commander’s public reputation.

Fairfax’s victories at Marston Moor and Naseby help create the New Model Army’s dominance, but the novel does not separate military achievement from exhaustion, injury and political strain. Anne and Thomas’s marriage is tested by absence and the demands of command rather than romantic intrigue. Sutcliff presents the “rider of the white horse” through the woman who shares his cause while seeing costs that official histories more easily overlook.
