Battle of Naseby

The Battle of Naseby was fought in Northamptonshire on 14 June 1645 between Charles I’s principal Royalist army and Parliament’s newly created New Model Army. Sir Thomas Fairfax commanded the Parliamentarians, with Oliver Cromwell leading cavalry, while Prince Rupert commanded the Royalist horse. After severe fighting, Parliamentarian cavalry returned to attack the Royalist infantry and turned retreat into destruction.

Naseby was the decisive military engagement of the First Civil War. The king lost veteran infantry, artillery, baggage and correspondence that Parliament later published to damage his credibility. Although Royalist resistance continued in fortresses and western armies, Charles could no longer replace the force lost at Naseby.
