Charles I of England

1600–1649

Charles I was king of England, Scotland and Ireland from 1625 until his execution in 1649. His conflicts with Parliament over taxation, religion and royal authority led to the Wars of the Three Kingdoms and the temporary overthrow of monarchy in England.

Charles I of England also held the offices or ranks of Prince of Wales, Duke of York, monarch of England, and monarch of Scotland. Charles I of England belonged to the House of Stuart and operated within Kingdom of England. Charles I of England was born in Dunfermline Palace and died in Palace of Whitehall.

In G. A. Henty’s Friends Though Divided, Historical figures including Charles I of England and Oliver Cromwell connect the fictional action directly to the documented events. In Jean Plaidy’s Myself, My Enemy, the daughter of Henry IV of France, Princess Henrietta Maria, becomes a pawn in a political strategy to stabilize relations between two countries when her father marries her to Charles I of England. Additional non-fiction treatment of Charles I of England comes from Peter Ackroyd’s Civil War, John Miller’s Early Modern Britain, 1450–1750, Leanda de Lisle’s Henrietta Maria, Charles Spencer’s Prince Rupert, and Antonia Fraser’s The Weaker Vessel.
