In 1647, Lucy Wentnor leaves the Midlands after an assault by soldiers and rejection by the man she expected to marry. She reaches London hoping to live with prosperous relatives, only to find their mercery close to ruin in a capital strained by war, shortages and political uncertainty.
Lucy finds work in the newly liberated printing trade, producing pamphlets and newsbooks while Parliament, the army, Royalists and Levellers compete to shape the peace. Her growing independence and relationship with blacksmith Jamie Hudson draw her into dangerous political networks as negotiations with Charles I give way to renewed conflict.
