After Octavian conquers Egypt in 30 BCE, eighteen-year-old Caesarion is marked for death because his claim to be Julius Caesar’s son makes him a possible rival. Wounded and left for dead, he survives under the name Arion and is rescued in the desert by Ani, an Egyptian merchant who has no reason to recognise the fallen king.
Travelling with Ani’s caravan, Caesarion encounters the ordinary Egyptian life from which his royal upbringing kept him apart. Friendship with Ani and love for his daughter Melanthe challenge his pride, but concealing his identity becomes harder as Octavian’s agents close in and Caesarion must decide whether nobility lies in a crown or in the life he chooses without one.
