Cleopatra assumes the Egyptian throne while her dynasty is divided and Rome controls the wider balance of power. Her alliance with Julius Caesar restores her rule and gives her a son, but Caesar's assassination leaves Egypt exposed to another struggle among Roman commanders.

Cleopatra's partnership with Mark Antony combines personal attachment with an attempt to build an eastern political order. Their defeat by Octavian, the future Augustus, brings the Ptolemaic kingdom to its final crisis.
