Wolf at the Gates follows Sertorius in 87 BC after Sulla’s seizure of Rome has broken the older rules of republican competition. Driven from the city and stripped of security, he must decide whether defending the Republic now means raising an army against Rome itself.
The book is tied to the conflict between Sulla’s supporters and the Marian-Cinnan faction, especially the struggle that led to the capture of Rome by Marius and Cinna. It continues the series’ concern with fathers, sons, exile and loyalty, but places those private pressures inside the Republic’s accelerating move toward civil war.
