The Man with Two Names introduces Quintus Sertorius as a young Sabine whose loyalty to family and village pushes him toward Roman public life. In Rome he encounters patronage, hunger, corruption and the influence of Gaius Marius, then moves toward military service at a time when the Republic is under pressure from both foreign threats and internal decay.

The book belongs to the late Roman Republic, especially the years around the Jugurthine and Cimbrian crises. Its value as historical fiction lies in shifting attention away from Caesar’s familiar generation and toward an earlier period when Marius, military reform, aristocratic rivalry and catastrophic northern defeats began to expose the weaknesses of republican government.
