Peter Darman is a British historical novelist and military-history writer whose fiction ranges from the ancient world to the twentieth century. Raised in Grantham, Lincolnshire, he studied History and International Relations at Nottingham before completing postgraduate research at the University of York on Prince Rupert’s cavalry and generalship during the English Civil War. He subsequently worked as a research officer with the Defence Intelligence Staff in Whitehall and, from 1990, as an editor specialising in history and military history. After more than twenty years in publishing he became a full-time writer in 2012. He has written more than fifty fiction and non-fiction titles and also publishes some work under the name Steve Crawford.

Darman’s historical fiction consists largely of long military-adventure series. The Parthian Chronicles, beginning with The Parthian, follows Pacorus through the wars of the Parthian Empire and Rome in the first century BC and eventually runs to sixteen novels, including Parthian Dawn, Carrhae, The Slave King, Sarmatian, Pacorus, Dura and Conqueror. The six-volume Crusader Chronicles, beginning with The Sword Brothers, moves to the Baltic Crusades of the early thirteenth century, while the four-book Catalan Chronicles—The Black Sheep, The White Dragon, The Golden Lion and The Silver Stallion—follows the Catalan Company in the Byzantine and eastern Mediterranean world. His nine-book Alpine Warrior series, beginning with Outcast and ending with Homeland, is set amid the wars of fifteenth-century Europe, including Switzerland, Italy, the Balkans, Constantinople and the struggle against the Ottoman Empire. More recently he has written the Redemption novels Herrenvolk and Out of the Ashes, set against the end of Nazi Germany and the creation of Israel, and in 2026 began the Satrap series with Lion of Persia, set in the sixth-century-BC Persian world.
