Greece, 1310–1311. Luca Baldi and the Catalan Company have made enemies across the eastern Mediterranean. Once useful as mercenaries, they have become an armed community that rulers fear but cannot easily destroy, and their latest service under Walter of Brienne, Duke of Athens, ends in another dispute over money and power.
With few allies and no secure territory of their own, Luca and his companions face a coalition determined to remove them. The conflict moves toward the Battle of Halmyros in 1311, where the Catalans confront the feudal army of Athens. Victory would give the company something it has never possessed before: a state of its own to defend.
