In the late 1450s and early 1460s, Leon Muller has risen from Swiss mercenary to one of the most formidable commanders in Hungary. His success has also made him dangerous to powerful men. Rebellious nobles, Habsburg interests, Ottoman expansion and the violent rule of Vlad Dracula in Wallachia surround Leon with enemies whose rivalries are larger than any private quarrel.

Leon must keep his veteran army together while deciding how far loyalty to Hungary, friendship and personal ambition can coexist. Campaigning across the Danube frontier brings him into a world where alliances change quickly and military success can provoke as much resentment as gratitude. The novel follows the consequences of a mercenary gaining political weight of his own, as Leon discovers that surviving the battlefield is easier than remaining independent of the rulers who want to use his army.
