The Holocaust was the systematic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of European Jews by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945. Nazi exclusion, dispossession and forced emigration escalated during the Second World War into ghettoisation, mass shootings, deportation, forced labour and extermination camps, resulting in the murder of approximately six million Jews.
The Nazi regime and its allies also persecuted and murdered Roma and Sinti, disabled people, Polish and Soviet civilians and prisoners of war, gay men, political opponents and other targeted groups. The Holocaust was inseparable from Nazi racial ideology, dictatorship and wartime occupation, and its history encompasses perpetrators, collaborators, bystanders, resistance, rescue, displacement and survival.
