A 1944 SAS operation in occupied France ends with the capture, torture and execution of thirty-one commandos under Hitler’s orders. After the war, surviving members and investigators begin identifying the SS and security officials responsible, following evidence through the ruins of the Third Reich after many suspects have abandoned uniforms and assumed civilian identities.
Lewis follows the unofficial pursuit beyond the formal end of the regiment’s wartime service. The investigators encounter concentration camps, failed denazification and the emerging strategic conflict with Stalin’s Soviet Union. The book was first issued under the shorter title The Nazi Hunters.
