Hamburg, 1963. Freelance journalist Peter Miller receives the diary of Salomon Tauber, a Jewish survivor who has taken his own life after recognising Eduard Roschmann, the former SS officer responsible for killings in Riga. Miller’s attempt to verify the sighting leads him beyond an individual fugitive to Odessa, a clandestine organisation that supplies former SS members with false identities, employment and protection.
With assistance from Israeli intelligence, Miller adopts the identity of a former camp guard and enters the escape network from within. He discovers that Odessa’s interests extend to German missile technology being prepared for Egypt and directed against Israel, while his pursuit of Roschmann becomes connected to the wartime murder of his own father. The novel combines a postwar Nazi hunt with an investigative thriller about the survival of Adolf Hitler’s ideology inside respectable institutions.
