Frederick Forsyth

1938–2025

Frederick Forsyth was an English novelist, journalist and former Royal Air Force pilot whose meticulously researched political and espionage thrillers helped define the modern genre. Born in Ashford, Kent, in 1938, he joined Reuters and later worked for the BBC, reporting from France and covering the Nigerian Civil War and the attempted secession of Biafra. His experiences of diplomacy, warfare and intelligence informed a documentary style built around authentic institutions, technical procedures and international politics. Forsyth later disclosed that he had also assisted MI6 on an unpaid basis. He died in 2025 at the age of eighty-six.

Forsyth achieved international success with The Day of the Jackal, about a fictional attempt to assassinate French president Charles de Gaulle, and followed it with novels including The Odessa File, The Dogs of War, The Devil’s Alternative, The Fourth Protocol, The Fist of God, Icon, The Afghan and The Kill List. His plots commonly involve assassins, intelligence officers, mercenaries and political conspiracies operating within recognisable historical crises such as the aftermath of Nazi Germany, the Cold War and the Gulf War. Although most of his novels were contemporary thrillers when published rather than conventional historical fiction, several now provide strongly researched fictional treatments of twentieth-century conflicts and international espionage.
