Charles de Gaulle

1890–1970

Charles de Gaulle was a French army officer, leader of Free France during the Second World War and later founder and first president of the Fifth Republic. He rejected the 1940 armistice, maintained French claims to independent authority among the Allies and returned to power in 1958 during the Algerian crisis.
