German Occupation of Norway

1940–1945 CE

German forces invaded Norway on 9 April 1940 in an operation designed to secure strategic ports, naval access and the supply route for Swedish iron ore. King Haakon VII and the Norwegian government refused German demands, continued resistance and eventually operated from exile after the military campaign ended.

Occupation authorities ruled through German military and civilian structures while Vidkun Quisling’s collaborationist regime attempted to impose fascist institutions. Norwegian resistance ranged from underground newspapers and teachers’ opposition to intelligence work, sabotage, escape networks and armed operations.

John Steinbeck’s The Moon Is Down uses an unnamed occupied mining town as a wartime fable strongly associated with the Norwegian experience.
