The Moon Is Down

An invading army seizes an unnamed northern European mining town with the help of a local collaborator. Colonel Lanser expects disciplined control, but Mayor Orden refuses to give the occupation moral legitimacy, and the execution of a townsman turns resentment into organised resistance. As sabotage spreads, the occupiers discover that arrests and reprisals can compel obedience without producing consent.

Written during the Second World War, the novel was designed as a portable fable for occupied Europe and became particularly associated with resistance in Norway. Steinbeck also enters the minds of the invading officers, presenting them not as invulnerable machines but as increasingly isolated men trapped inside a system whose violence makes stable rule impossible.
