D-Day and Normandy Campaign

1944 CE

D-Day, 6 June 1944, began the Allied invasion of Normandy and the liberation campaign in western Europe. American, British, Canadian and other forces landed on fortified beaches while airborne troops fought inland. The campaign that followed involved hedgerow fighting, logistics, civilian suffering and the gradual collapse of German positions in France.

It mattered because it created the western front that helped defeat Nazi Germany. Normandy also combined grand strategy with intensely local experiences in villages, beaches, hospitals and resistance networks.
