The Steel Wave

by Jeff Shaara Book 2 in the World War II series.

First published 2008

4.4(10,670)

As the Allies prepare to invade France, Dwight D. Eisenhower must impose unity on a coalition whose commanders disagree over strategy, timing and national priorities. Omar Bradley and Bernard Montgomery prepare the land forces, George S. Patton waits for a command, and Erwin Rommel strengthens the Atlantic Wall while arguing with the German high command over how the beaches should be defended.

The invasion is experienced through paratroopers scattered across Normandy and infantry approaching Omaha Beach under direct fire. The novel follows the campaign beyond 6 June 1944 as the Allies struggle through hedgerows and attempt to expand the beachhead. Command decisions are measured against the confusion, casualties and endurance of the men required to carry them out.
