The Civil War in the West

The Civil War in the West is a four-volume sequence following the principal campaigns that decided control of the Mississippi Valley and the Deep South. A Blaze of Glory reconstructs Shiloh; A Chain of Thunder follows Grant’s Vicksburg campaign; The Smoke at Dawn moves through Chickamauga and Chattanooga; and The Fateful Lightning carries Sherman’s armies from Atlanta through Georgia and the Carolinas.

The series combines the viewpoints of senior commanders with those of junior officers, enlisted soldiers and civilians. Its geographical movement from Tennessee and Mississippi into Georgia and the Carolinas shows how manoeuvre, supply, siege warfare, emancipation and destruction transformed the conflict beyond the better-known eastern battlefields.
