Siege of Vicksburg

The Siege of Vicksburg ended in July 1863 when Confederate forces surrendered the fortified Mississippi River city to Ulysses S. Grant. The campaign involved manoeuvre, siege warfare, civilian hardship and control of river supply lines. Vicksburg fell one day after Gettysburg ended.
Its significance lies in the splitting of the Confederacy and Union control of the Mississippi. The siege also shows the western theatre’s importance beyond the more famous Virginia campaigns. It supports fiction about soldiers, civilians trapped under bombardment, river war, enslaved people and the grinding logistics of victory.
