A Blaze of Glory

by Jeff Shaara Book 1 in the The Civil War in the West series.

First published 2012

4.2(9,218)

In spring 1862, Confederate forces in the western theatre have been driven from Kentucky and much of Tennessee. Albert Sidney Johnston gathers an army at Corinth and plans to strike Ulysses S. Grant near Pittsburg Landing before Don Carlos Buell can reinforce him. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman and their inexperienced soldiers do not expect the scale of the attack that reaches their camps on 6 April.

The novel follows commanders on both sides and ordinary soldiers through the two days of the Battle of Shiloh. Johnston’s death, the defence of the Union position and Grant’s counterattack reveal a war becoming far bloodier than either government anticipated. This is the opening volume of The Civil War in the West.
