The Shadow of War

In 1962, Soviet missiles are secretly transported to Cuba and launch sites are constructed within range of the United States. John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy confront military advice for air strikes or invasion, while Robert McNamara helps organise a naval quarantine intended to stop additional equipment without triggering an immediate war. Fidel Castro and Nikita Khrushchev face their own pressures and conflicting objectives.

The novel moves from the White House and Kremlin to Soviet technicians in Cuba and American naval crews enforcing the blockade. Each side must interpret incomplete information while nuclear forces remain ready for use. Shaara treats the crisis as a political thriller grounded in the danger that local actions, damaged communications or misjudged resolve could override the leaders attempting to control escalation.
