Fidel Castro

Fidel Castro was a Cuban revolutionary and political leader who overthrew the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1959. He became prime minister and later president, establishing a one-party socialist state closely aligned with the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Castro’s government expanded education and health provision while suppressing political opposition, restricting civil liberties and driving large waves of exile. His rule was central to events including the Bay of Pigs invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis and decades of confrontation with the United States.

Jeff Shaara’s The Shadow of War treats Fidel Castro as one of the three leaders trapped inside the Cuban Missile Crisis, balancing his revolutionary government’s security against the possibility that Soviet and American decisions will determine Cuba’s fate. Max Hastings’ Abyss reconstructs the same thirteen days from Havana as well as Moscow and Washington, showing how Castro’s demands and fears differed from Khrushchev’s calculations. Wilbur Smith’s Golden Fox moves into the later Cold War, using a Soviet-aligned Cuban intelligence network and southern African conflict to show the international reach of the revolutionary state created under Castro.
