South Africa from the late 1940s into the 1960s. Shasa Courtney enters government believing that influence inside the National Party may allow him to restrain its programme of racial separation. His half-brother Manfred de la Rey sees the same political movement as the means to secure Afrikaner power, while Shasa’s wife Tara joins the Black Sash and increasingly supports organised resistance to apartheid. Their private loyalties are tested by legislation that divides communities, restricts movement and turns political disagreement into a matter of surveillance and personal danger.

The novel places the Courtney family inside the creation and consolidation of the apartheid state. Parliamentary manoeuvring, police repression, underground activism and the aftermath of the Sharpeville massacre expose the widening distance between gradual reform and revolutionary opposition. Family secrets give Manfred and Shasa reasons to protect one another even as their public choices pull them apart. Smith uses their conflict to examine how wealth and political access can conceal the human consequences of state power, and how a family accustomed to controlling events becomes divided by the future of South Africa itself.
