South African Border War

1966–1989

The South African Border War developed from South African control of Namibia and the armed struggle led by SWAPO. Operations increasingly crossed into Angola after Portuguese colonial rule collapsed in 1975.

South African forces, Angolan movements, Cuban troops and Soviet-supported governments fought through conventional battles, raids and covert operations. The conflict ended as regional agreements opened the way to Namibian independence.
