Great Depression
1929–1939 CE
The Great Depression began after the 1929 crash and spread through banking, trade, employment and agriculture across much of the world. It caused unemployment, poverty, migration, political anger and distrust of existing institutions. The crisis damaged liberal democracies and strengthened extremist movements in several countries.
Its significance lies in the way economic collapse became political and personal. Families lost homes, workers travelled for jobs, and states experimented with relief, repression or authoritarian promises. Depression-era fiction can follow migrants, detectives, union organisers, ruined families and people drawn toward radical politics.
