Interwar Period

1918–1939 CE

The Interwar Period covers the years from the end of the First World War in 1918 to the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. The peace settlements redrew borders and dismantled empires, while veterans, refugees and bereaved families lived with the social and psychological consequences of mass warfare.

The period combined democratic experiment, mass consumer culture and technological change with severe instability. The Great Depression intensified unemployment and political radicalisation, fascist and authoritarian regimes expanded, the Soviet Union consolidated its power, and the Spanish Civil War and repeated diplomatic crises exposed the weakness of the post-war international order.
