British Mandate in Iraq and the 1920 Revolt
1920–1932
After the First World War, Britain administered Iraq under a mandate system that replaced Ottoman rule with a new political order. The arrangement was contested by local leaders, tribal groups, former Ottoman officers and nationalist movements.
The 1920 revolt exposed the limits of British control and encouraged the use of air policing, advisers and indirect rule. Iraq became formally independent in 1932, though British influence remained important.
