Salvador Allende

1908–1973

Salvador Allende was a Chilean physician and socialist politician who served as president of Chile from 1970 until the military coup of 1973. After decades in parliamentary politics, he won the presidency at the head of the Popular Unity coalition and attempted a democratic transition toward socialism through nationalisation, land reform and expanded social programmes.

A physician and long-serving politician, Allende led the Popular Unity coalition and pursued nationalisation, land reform and expanded social provision. His government faced severe political polarisation, economic disruption, opposition from domestic groups and covert intervention from the United States. He died in La Moneda Palace during the coup.

Isabel Allende’s A Long Petal of the Sea follows Spanish Republican refugees who build a life in Chile and eventually experience the political polarisation that brings Salvador Allende to the presidency and ends with the 1973 military coup. Allende belongs to the novel’s historical public world, linking the characters’ second exile to the destruction of Chile’s elected socialist government. The House of the Spirits fictionalises the same national trajectory through the Trueba family: the unnamed socialist president and the coup that overthrows him closely evoke Salvador Allende and the Pinochet takeover, allowing family memory, class conflict and political repression to mirror the history of Allende’s Chile without becoming a literal biography.
