London, 1933. Eddie Pettit, a gentle man known among the costermongers for his ability with horses, dies in what is described as an industrial accident. Men who have known Maisie since childhood believe the death was deliberate and ask her to investigate because official attention will not be given to someone of Eddie’s status.
Eddie’s observations had brought him close to wealthy businessmen and political organisers interested in Britain’s response to the new German regime. Maisie follows the case from working-class stables to centres of influence and must decide how to pursue justice when exposing the immediate killer may not stop the larger forces that considered Eddie expendable.
