Kent, July 1914. Kezia Marchant marries farmer Tom Brissenden despite the disapproval of his sister Thea, her former school friend and a committed supporter of women’s suffrage. A month later Britain enters the war, Tom enlists and Kezia assumes responsibility for a farm whose survival depends on work she has only begun to understand.
Tom serves on the Western Front while Thea is drawn into wartime nursing, and the three sustain one another through letters that replace fear with imagined meals and reassuring versions of home. The stories offer temporary protection from hunger and violence, but the war eventually forces each of them to confront the difference between compassionate invention and the lies used to avoid unbearable truth.
