London, 1940. American correspondent Catherine Saxon is murdered after reporting on the Blitz, and British authorities conceal the death while they determine whether her journalism, family connections or access to government information placed her in danger. Maisie is asked to investigate alongside American agent Mark Scott.
Air raids repeatedly interrupt the inquiry and expose the risks faced by reporters, rescue workers and civilians. Maisie must also protect Anna, the young evacuee she hopes to adopt, while deciding how far she can trust Scott. The case reveals competing British and American interests in publicising the war and in controlling what Catherine intended to send home.
