In August 1939, thirteen-year-old Poppy Brown is evacuated from London to Dorset with only a gas mask and a change of clothes. Billeted in a grand house where neither family nor servants make her welcome, she is isolated from home and later devastated by news that her relatives have been killed during the Blitz.
Poppy moves again, works as a hospital cleaner and trains as a nurse as the war continues. While the man she loves serves as a pilot, she faces air raids, shortages and loss on the home front, trying to create a family and purpose from the upheaval of wartime.
