The Blitz
1940–1941 CE
The Blitz was the sustained bombing of London and other British cities by German aircraft, especially in 1940 and 1941. Civilians sheltered in Underground stations, basements and public shelters while fire services, rescue workers and hospitals struggled with destruction. The campaign made the home front a direct battlefield.
The Blitz mattered because it reshaped ideas of civilian endurance and urban vulnerability. It also created powerful contrasts between official morale, private terror, class inequality and everyday survival. Novels by Kate Atkinson, Sarah Waters, Connie Willis and others use the Blitz for stories of family, death, time, secrecy and resilience.
