Finest Hour

by Phil Craig, Tim Clayton

First published 1999

4.6(127)

Phil Craig and Tim Clayton reconstruct Britain’s crisis year of 1940 through diaries, letters, memoirs and later testimony from servicemen and civilians. Their narrative moves from the aftermath of the fall of France and the threat of invasion into the Battle of Britain, following RAF pilots, commanders, sailors and families as the Luftwaffe attempted to defeat Fighter Command and force Britain from the war.

The book then follows the air campaign into the Blitz, placing familiar national mythology beside the fear, losses and strategic uncertainty recorded by people who experienced the conflict directly. Hugh Dowding’s defence system, Churchill’s political leadership and German operational decisions provide the higher-level framework, but the distinctive method is to connect those decisions with individual experience rather than presenting the campaign solely as conventional military history.
