Alvesdon
First published 2024
In August 1939, three generations of the Castell family gather around the Wiltshire village of Alvesdon as Europe approaches war. Farming, marriage and local obligations continue, but younger family members are already entering the services and government work that will pull them far beyond the village.
The family’s experiences range from Norway and Dunkirk to Palestine, the Land Army and the skies of the Battle of Britain. Public events repeatedly arrive as private loss, changing relationships and the future of the estate. The novel begins a family saga in which the survival of a rural community is inseparable from the global conflict.
