In July 1943, Jack Tanner lands in Sicily as Allied forces open a new front against the Axis. The campaign brings British troops into contact with Italian civilians, Fascist officials and German units preparing to withdraw while inflicting as much delay as possible.
Tanner is pulled into a covert struggle involving divided Italian loyalties and a pact whose exposure could damage the invasion. The fall of Mussolini makes every alliance unstable. Tanner must complete the mission while deciding which former enemies can be trusted and which supposed allies intend to protect themselves at any cost.
