Darkest Hour
First published 2009
In May 1940, Jack Tanner’s battalion is sent into Belgium as German armoured forces break through the Ardennes and cut the Allied armies away from their supply lines. Tanner recognises that the official orders no longer match the battlefield and attempts to keep his men together during the retreat.
A German agent working among the Allies adds betrayal to the danger of encirclement. Tanner must identify the spy while fighting towards Dunkirk, where evacuation is uncertain and the beaches remain under attack. The novel places personal loyalty and counter-espionage inside the confusion of France’s military collapse.
