Duty Calls: Dunkirk
First published 2011
Private Johnny Hawke lies about his age to join the British Army and is sent to France before he has the experience to understand either military routine or the scale of the German offensive. When the Allied front collapses in May 1940, his platoon is drawn into a retreat marked by air attack, exhausted marches and the loss of men he has only just learned to trust.
The journey towards Dunkirk strips away Johnny’s expectations of adventure and patriotic glory. He must kill at close range, care for wounded comrades and decide when obedience is less important than survival. The evacuation offers rescue, but it cannot restore the certainty or innocence with which he entered the war.
