Benito Mussolini

1883–1945

Benito Mussolini was the founder of Italian Fascism and dictator of Italy from 1922 until his fall in 1943. His regime suppressed opposition, pursued imperial expansion, allied with Nazi Germany, and brought Italy into the Second World War with catastrophic consequences.

Benito Mussolini also held the offices or ranks of Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Italy, First marshal of the empire, minister of Interior of the Kingdom of Italy, and foreign minister. Benito Mussolini belonged to the Romeo Santos and operated within Italian Social Republic; Kingdom of Italy. Benito Mussolini was born in Predappio and died in Giulino.

David Boyle’s Munich 1938 examines Mussolini as the dictator who inserted himself into the Sudeten crisis and helped stage the final conference that dismembered Czechoslovakia. Wilbur Smith’s Cry Wolf and Christopher Nicole’s The Sword and the Scalpel move back to Mussolini’s assault on Ethiopia, showing fictional characters caught in a war driven by Fascist expansion and overwhelming Italian military power. The Italian Invasion of Ethiopia treats the same campaign directly, including the use of chemical weapons, the weakness of League sanctions and the creation of Italian East Africa. James Holland’s Sicily ’43 shows the other end of Mussolini’s rule: Allied invasion, Italian military collapse and the political crisis that removed him from power. Together the books move from imperial ambition and diplomatic theatre to the failure of the regime he created.
