The Savage Storm

After the invasion of Sicily, Allied forces cross to mainland Italy in September 1943 expecting the country’s surrender to accelerate the campaign. Instead, German forces occupy key positions and fight a controlled withdrawal through terrain ideally suited to defence, while Italian civilians face invasion, occupation and political collapse.

Holland follows the landings at Salerno and the advance towards the Winter Line through soldiers, aircrew, commanders and civilians. Rain, mountains, destroyed roads and coalition disagreements slow every operation. The campaign becomes a test of logistics and endurance, demonstrating why Italy could not provide the quick route into Germany its advocates had promised.
