Having finally escaped from Singapore, Captain Harry Brand and his wife Constance find themselves in British-held Burma. But this is World War II and Burma is falling. The Forgotten War: a struggle to defend India and recapture Burma, is about to begin. Harry vows to stay and fight, but Constance thinks only of her young son and boards the first plane out of Burma. At first it seems that Constance might finally return home, but when her plane crashes she ends up a prisoner at a brutal POW camp.
Harry, not knowing whether she is alive or dead, fights his way out with Burma Corps and must take part in the epic fight to take Burma back, all the while following orders from his flawed superiors. The war is long, and brutal, and as they endure the horrors of the war, it becomes clear that even if they do find each other again, they will be changed. The collapse of British power in Southeast Asia sends Harry into the Burma retreat and Constance into captivity, testing whether their marriage can survive separate experiences of combat, imprisonment and prolonged uncertainty.
