As Japanese forces advance on Singapore in 1942, English musician Norah Chambers sends her young daughter away to safety but remains with her husband and elderly parents. Australian nurse Nesta James is serving with the Allied medical corps as the city collapses. Both women join the crowded evacuation aboard the Vyner Brooke, only for the ship to be bombed and sunk off the coast of Sumatra.

After reaching land, Norah and Nesta are captured and confined with other civilian women and nurses in Japanese prison camps. Starvation, disease, forced movement and violence reduce their world to the daily work of keeping one another alive. Inspired by the experiences of real prisoners, the novel follows the friendships, medical care and music through which the women preserve dignity and solidarity during years of captivity.
